The approach

What is integrative medicine?

Integrative medicine keeps everything conventional medicine does well, like diagnosis, testing and treatment when it’s clinically appropriate, and adds back what a short appointment squeezes out: time, context, and a look at how the pieces fit.

Most people now arrive with a pattern, not a single problem: the fatigue that travels with the poor sleep, the stress, the gut. Treat one in isolation and the rest carries on. Integrative medicine asks what the symptoms have in common and what would move the whole, and it stays clinically governed while it does.

Plain English

Integrative, functional, holistic, naturopathic, lifestyle.

Integrative medicine
The umbrella: conventional, evidence-informed medicine and complementary approaches, coordinated under one clinical plan by registered health practitioners. It’s what we practise.
Functional medicine
A way of thinking that often sits inside integrative care. It looks at the body as interacting systems and works back towards why a problem is happening, not only what to call it. Functional medicine in Cairns
Holistic care
A lens, not a discipline: body, mind and daily life considered together. Integrative medicine is holistic by design.
Naturopathy
A separate profession with its own training and scope. Naturopaths aren’t registered medical practitioners.
Lifestyle medicine
Nutrition, sleep, movement and stress, used as care in their own right. Part of how integrative medicine works, not a separate aisle.

How we practise it

One team, one record, time built back in.

A whole-person assessment

Your first appointment is long enough to map a pattern instead of chasing one symptom: your history, your sleep, your stress, your day, looked at together.

One team, one record

Nurses, GPs and our nurse practitioner work from one shared record, so when the plan changes, everyone knows why. You stop being the courier for your own story.

Registered and accountable

Our GPs, nurse practitioner and nurses are registered with Ahpra, and the register is public, so you can check. Any treatment is decided with you, after a proper assessment.

What people bring to us

Patterns, more often than single diagnoses.

Pain changes how you sleep. Sleep changes your mood. Stress shows up in the gut. These are six places people often start.

The human condition is wider than any list, so if yours isn’t here, it’s still welcome here. See all areas

How Sohma works

Questions

Before you book.

How is it different from seeing my GP?
Integrative medicine combines conventional, evidence-informed medicine with a whole-person view, looking at the pattern across your symptoms rather than each one alone. The practical difference at Sohma is time and coordination: longer first appointments, a written plan, and a team that works from one shared record. A standard GP appointment does important work; it just wasn’t built to hold a long, overlapping story.
Who will I see?
Care usually starts with one of our nurses or our nurse practitioner, with a doctor alongside. The 90-minute assessment is with our nurse practitioner.
Are your practitioners registered?
Our GPs, nurse practitioner and nurses are registered with Ahpra. The register is public, so you can check.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book yourself, or start with a free 10–15 minute call with one of our nurses, who’ll help you choose an appointment. The call isn’t a clinical assessment.
What does it cost?
The Functional & Integrative Medicine Assessment is $299 for 60 minutes, or $399 for 90. Medicare rebates may apply, and they’re generally better face to face; reception can confirm your expected rebate and out-of-pocket cost before you book.
Can I see you by telehealth?
Yes, anywhere in Australia, by phone or video, with the same team and the same shared record. The fee is the same, though Medicare rebates for telehealth usually need one face-to-face visit with us in the past 12 months. For the assessment, in person is preferred.
