The loop

Wired, but tired.

Stress and sleep feed each other. A stress response that stays switched on makes it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep, and lost sleep is itself a stress on the body. Round it goes.

We look at the whole pattern around it: your load, your sleep, hormonal change, blood sugar, mood and the gut. In one longer appointment, with a nurse or our nurse practitioner and a doctor alongside.

Telling them apart

Stress, burnout and broken sleep.

Stress
Rises with pressure and eases when it passes. You recover.
Burnout
When the reset stops happening: rest no longer restores you, and a weekend off doesn’t touch it.
Trouble falling asleep
Tired but switched on at bedtime, often with a racing mind.
Waking in the night
Waking at the same hour, often in the early morning, and struggling to get back to sleep.

How we look at it

The pattern underneath, not another sleep tip.

Your load and your days

Work, family, the hours you keep and what has changed, because sleep happens inside a life.

The body alongside

Hormonal change, blood sugar, mood and the gut, read together with your sleep rather than apart from it.

Tests only when they’re useful

Bring the results you already have. Any further test is explained and priced before it’s ordered, and only suggested when it could change your plan.

Worth knowing

When sleep needs a doctor first.

Some sleep problems need medical investigation in their own right. We’ll look more closely, or refer, where there’s any of these.

How Sohma works

Questions

Before you book.

Why am I exhausted but can’t fall asleep?
It’s the wired-but-tired pattern. When the stress response stays switched on, the body struggles to wind down at night even when you’re depleted. It feels like a personal failing; it’s usually a pattern worth assessing properly.
Why do I keep waking at 3 am?
Early waking has several common threads, including the body’s natural pre-dawn rise in stress hormones and overnight dips in blood sugar. We look at the pattern in your case rather than assuming one cause.
What’s the difference between stress and burnout?
Stress rises and then resolves. Burnout is when that reset stops happening: rest no longer restores you. Burnout usually needs a look at the whole picture, which is what a longer appointment is for.
My bloods are normal but I still feel awful. Can you help?
Normal usually means nothing is acutely wrong, not that everything is working well. We look at the pattern across your sleep, load, hormones, blood sugar and mood, and read results in context. We can’t promise an outcome, only a thorough approach.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book yourself, or start with a free 10–15 minute call with one of our nurses, who’ll help you choose an appointment. The call isn’t a clinical assessment.
What does it cost?
The Functional & Integrative Medicine Assessment is $299 for 60 minutes, or $399 for 90. Medicare rebates may apply, and they’re generally better face to face; reception can confirm your expected rebate and out-of-pocket cost before you book.
Can I see you by telehealth?
Yes, anywhere in Australia, by phone or video, with the same team and the same shared record. The fee is the same, though Medicare rebates for telehealth usually need one face-to-face visit with us in the past 12 months. For the assessment, in person is preferred.
