The field

What is alternative medicine?

Alternative medicine is a broad field: the traditional and complementary approaches that sit alongside conventional medicine. Some of it is well supported and some isn’t, and natural doesn’t automatically mean safe.

At Sohma it’s clinically governed. Care starts with a nurse or our nurse practitioner, with a doctor alongside, and your current care stays in view. It isn’t a rejection of your GP; it’s a wider conversation about your options, with the evidence and the risks on the table.

Why people come

Common reasons people look further.

Treatment only half worked
You did what was suggested and the problem is still there, or only partly better. That’s worth taking seriously.
The side effects were the problem
Sometimes a treatment works but costs more than the symptom did. That’s a legitimate reason to look for another way through.
Nothing was explained
A folder of results that each look fine, and no one joining them up. We explain the reasoning, so you leave understanding the plan.
You want to be heard
Being heard shouldn’t feel like a luxury. A longer first appointment gives the whole story room.

How we practise it

Your medicines, reviewed together.

One list of everything

Prescriptions, supplements and anything else you take are reviewed together, because supplements and herbal preparations can interact with prescription medicines. Nothing new is suggested without checking it against what you already use.

Adjusted as you go

After the first appointment, follow-up appointments, and nurse check-ins between them at no charge, so the plan can be adjusted as you go.

Registered and accountable

Our GPs, nurse practitioner and nurses are registered with Ahpra, and the register is public, so you can check. Any treatment is decided with you, after a proper assessment.

What people bring to us

Patterns, more often than single diagnoses.

People come with the slow, overlapping picture: fatigue, sleep, stress, the gut, hormonal change, pain. These are six places people often start.

The human condition is wider than any list, so if yours isn’t here, it’s still welcome here. See all areas

Your first appointment

The Alternative Medicine Pathway.

A first appointment to review your concerns, your current care and the options that suit you. After that, follow-up appointments, and nurse check-ins between them at no charge, so the plan can be adjusted as you go. This pathway isn’t right for everyone. If you’re unsure, book the free nurse call first.

How Sohma works

Questions

Before you book.

Is alternative medicine safe?
Some of it is well supported and some isn’t, and natural doesn’t automatically mean safe. That’s why your current medicines are reviewed before anything is suggested, and why any recommendation is made by your practitioner after a proper assessment.
Does it work alongside my GP?
Yes. It sits alongside conventional care, not against it. We’re not here to replace your GP.
Can supplements or herbal preparations interact with my prescriptions?
They can. That’s why your full list of medicines and supplements is reviewed as part of your assessment, before anything new is suggested.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book yourself, or start with a free 10–15 minute call with one of our nurses, who’ll help you choose an appointment. The call isn’t a clinical assessment.
What does it cost?
A first appointment on the Alternative Medicine Pathway is $179 for 35 minutes, and Transfer of Care is $129 for 30 minutes. Medicare rebates may apply; reception can confirm your expected rebate and out-of-pocket cost before you book. Cameron’s consultations don’t attract a Medicare rebate.
Can I see you by telehealth?
Yes, anywhere in Australia, by phone or video, with the same team and the same shared record. The fee is the same, though Medicare rebates for telehealth usually need one face-to-face visit with us in the past 12 months.
